Beer Making Class in Miami

This Sunday on a little farm in Little Haiti you can learn to make beer. May not seem the likely location for such an event but why not since the ingredients for the beer comes from a farm. I like the theme of "When the apocalypse comes, you will want to know how to brew your own beer!" A very true statement. This should be a great time in a nice relaxed atmosphere. Here is what will be covered in the class.

"From Seeds to Suds"
An Introduction to Homebrewing

Want to learn how to make your own beer? What better way to learn than by actually DOING? During this class we will physically make a 5-gallon batch of beer, and cover every step of the process from start to finish.

Important questions and topics that will be addressed:

• What equipment do I need in order to brew my own beer from home?

• What ingredients do I use to make beer?

o What is malted barley?

o Why does beer have flowers (hops) in it?

o What other flavors can I add to my beer?

o What exactly IS yeast and how does it make alcohol?

• What is the difference between a lager and an ale?

• How long does fermentation really take?
• Why and how is beer carbonated?

• Why would I want to spend more time and effort homebrewing when I can just pick up a six-pack at the store?

Did you try your “uncle’s” homebrew and nearly gag at the first swallow? Don’t be fooled, if you pay attention and take your time, you and ANYONE can make quality delicious homebrew. You will be amazed at how satisfying a feeling it is to crack open a bottle of beer that you carefully nurtured into existence and then share that creation with friends and family—and they will be even more amazed.

Relax, don’t worry, have a homebrew!

$45 until March 20th, $55 at the event. Bring 6 empty beer bottles with the labels off to house your own brew. Send payment by clicking on the "Paypal" button on the homepage of www.fertileearth.org and put "beer" in the subject. Hope to see you there!

St. Patricks Day Events

St. Patrick's Day is upon us once again. Or as some like to call it Amateur Night. It's that day when you get to see people who are obviously not Irish wearing shirts that say, "Kiss me I'm Irish." Drinking green beer or Guinness. And inevitably throwing up in their friend's car on the way home. For those of us looking for something outside of just Guinness and green beer(ok maybe some) you can enjoy some beers at these fine places.

The D.R.B., Miami- The D.R.B. will be having pints of green Magic Hat #9 and slices of Shepard's pie for only $3.50 each. And if you real want to get crazy let them draw a green shamrock on your forehead and your first Irish beer is free, and the rest are ½ off during your visit! And if that wasn't enough take a picture of yourself (away from The D.R.B.) with two other people and the shamrock on your forehead, post your picture to their Facebook page by Friday, and your first draft pint of beer is free on your next visit. I just hope they aren't using permanent marker or you are going to look real stupid at work the next day.

Miami Bicycle Pub Crawl

I just bought a bike a few weeks ago and haven't had much time to use it since I have been pretty busy with beer events. Thanks to the good people over at the blog Miami Bike Scene I can now combine both my new bike and a beer event. On Saturday, March 6th Miami Bike Scene will host what they are calling the Beer Snob Bicycle Pub Crawl. It will start at 4:00pm at Zeke's on Lincoln Rd. and will hit The Abbey, The D.R.B.(The D.R.B. will have Magic Hat #9 onsale for the biker participating in the ride for only $3.50 and a Magic Hat rep there handing out free swag), and end at Titanic in Coral Gables. Titanic is right by the Metrorail so if you would prefer to take that back part of the way instead of riding back you can do that. It is recommend to bring a bike lock and also a light as it will be dark for part of the ride.

They will also be making these commemorative t shirts for the ride for only $10. You can go and leave a comment about what size shirt you want by clicking here. You can also RSVP by clicking here.

Southern Tier Brewing Comes to South Florida

If the continuous flow of great breweries coming into Florida never stops that would be fine with me. This month we can welcome a brewery that's new to most but a don't-miss. It will probably be one of your new favorite breweries. Southern Tier, from Southern New York, has finally come to town and with quite a selection. They will have four 12oz sixpacks and four 22oz bottles available year round with seasonals/limited releases rotating throughout the year (right now we have three). The other great thing about all of these beers are that they are pretty inexpensive for such great beer. Check the events calendar for upcoming launch parties. Here is what they say about each of the beers that are now available.

Year-round Beers

ipa

the iso-alpha acid experience

IPA stands for India Pale Ale and ours is an American version of the classic style. IPA’s namesake lies in its colonial roots. British soldiers on their way to India drank a lot of beer, but found it would go stale on the long voyages. Meanwhile, brewers knew that by adding more hops the beer would stay fresh. Voila! A new style was born and it is one we are proud to brew. Southern Tier IPA is tripled on its journey to your glass for a fully aromatic experience.

phin & matt’s

brewed with American hops & barley

When we sat down to collaborate on this beer, we knew we had to create something extraordinary. After sampling a wide array of great beers, we hit upon an idea: use vast amounts of whole hops, the finest malted barley North America has to offer, and crystal filtered artesian water. Thus creating this classic American style pale ale.

porter

don’t be afraid of the dark

Porter is our darkest beer, but not necessarily our strongest. It is widely held that the darker the beer, the stronger the beer, but this is summarily false. The contribution of color comes directly from the color of malt that we use. Some malt is roasted to achieve dark color and coffee-like flavor which in turn get transferred to the beer. Our Porter is richly complex with overtones of chocolate and espresso beans followed by a subtle flavor of hops. It’s a nourishing beer without being too sweet or filling.

raspberry wheat beer

malt beverage brewed with raspberries

A golden wheat beer brewed with the finest North American malted barley and wheat. It’s then lightly hopped with the choicest European varieties. This smooth, crisp golden wheat beer is then finished with a hint of raspberry. Enjoy this beer any time of year.

422 pale wheat ale

“make everyday earth day!”

Pour 422 Pale Wheat Ale into a pint glass, give it a long whiff and you’ll realize that this isn’t your average pale golden wheat. Preserved in its unfiltered state, 422 is a fantastic session ale in which flavors of wheat, barley and hops commingle to a refreshing and zesty conclusion. Hints of orange and sweet malts waft to the fore as a touch of bitterness contributes to a smooth finish. 422 is brewed as a tribute to preserving our precious planet and it’s environment. It is responsibly packaged with over 80% recycled consumer products and is completely recyclable. Enjoy 422 all year as to take one stride closer to a eco-friendly life.

Imperials

unearthly Imperial IPA

an uninhibited infusion of hops

At the Southern Tier Brewing Company, vigorously hopped beer is our standard and inspiration. We continue a commitment to innovation with our most aggressive offering yet. Unearthly is a manifestation of the brewer’s craft; skillfully balancing art and the forces of nature to produce a divine liquid. Delicately pour a taste into a fluted glass. Smell the enchanting aromas of the hops waft forward as your first sip divulges this beer’s fervent soul. To underestimate Unearthly is to trifle with the mysteries of the universe, so please consume wisely.
9.8% abv • 15.6ºL • Imperial India Pale Ale • 22 oz

hoppe Imperial Extra Pale Ale

an ale of simple composition

The simplicity of Hoppe tests the skill and ability of the brewer to create something truly majestic. We craft this much like a sculptor who uses only a hammer and chisel to shape stone into a masterpiece. Hoppe is spawned of these few essentials: barley, wheat, hops, yeast and water. This limited palette is an exercise in minimalism, with refined elements which are deliberately selected. This simple combination creates a golden shimmering brew infused with delicate aromas. The artful nature of this beer is exposed with the first taste. As the malt and hops create a composition of flavors, an elegant finish leaves an impression that your tastes will not soon forget.
8.3% abv. • 8.5ºL • Imperial Extra Pale Ale • 22 oz (pronounced 'hop')

big red Imperial Red Ale

fueled by creativity & imagination

Inspiration can sometimes be found in the strangest of places. This eccentric brew started with a single flower from a hop named Hallertau. The delicate and spicy aroma present in this flower has been responsible for generations of great beers. Hallertau hops are to a brewer what an old tractor is to a farmer: reliable. Big Red expresses the nobility of Hallertau by placing it at the forefront of this Imperial Ale. Pour it into a snifter. A swirl allows the spicy aromas to come forward as a taste to the lips reveals the complex balance between sweet malts and the bitterness of hops. Big Red’s ability to please is as dependable as your grandpa’s old tractor, and just as powerful–so please don’t drink and drive.
9.5% abv • 15ºL • Imperial Red Ale • 22 oz

iniquity Imperial Black Ale

“the antithesis of unearthly”

The hexagram talisman has been used around the world for centuries to invoke magic and good luck. The six–point star is also the customary symbol of the brewer, representing the essential aspects of purity: water, hops, grain, malt, yeast, and of course, the brewer. Wishes of good fortune often collaborate with the brewer’s creativity to yield dramatic results. We carefully chose the name for this Imperial India Black Ale, Iniquity – a word opposing goodness. Why? This beer is contrary to what one may expect from an IPA; this is an ale as black as night. It is the antithesis of Unearthly. Some may consider it an immoral act to blacken an ale. We suggest they don’t rely on conventional standards. Allow the darkness to consume you. Cheers!

Limited Release Imperial

gemini Imperial Blended Ale

blended unearthly & unfiltered hoppe

High in the winter sky, two parallel stick figures are visible & known as “the twins,” or the constellation Gemini. The astronauts of the 1960s flew as teams of two in a program named after the celestial pairing. At Southern Tier, we have our own fraternal twins, Hoppe & Unearthly. Blended together & placed in this vessel, the mission of our Gemini is to travel high & take passengers on a journey far into the heavens.

Imperial Chocolate Stout

the ancients called it 'food for the gods'

The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples.

Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Help Support Brewpubs Selling Beer To Go

Florida has come a long way in the beer world in the last few years. We now have a great selection of beers to choose from and you can buy growlers of beer at stores. One thing you still can't do though is buy beer from your local brewpub to drink at home. I'm sure there have been nights when you've sat at home and thought, "Boy, I would love one of those great beers they make over at (insert local brewpub name here) but I just don't feel like running out to the bar tonight. I wish I could just grab one out of the fridge." Well, the day has come to help make your dreams come true. Here is what the Florida Brewers Guild is asking you to do.

"We have a potential sponsor in the FL House to introduce legislation as a companion bill to Senate Bill 2062, but he is hesitant to keep the provision that would allow brewpubs to sell for off-premise consumption. We need you to send an email ASAP to Rep. Mike Horner, thanking him for considering sponsoring a companion bill to Senate Bill 2062, and state that you support legislation to allow brewpubs to sell for off-premise consumption. Use the following link: http://www.myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/Representatives/emailrepresentative.aspx?MemberId=4455&SessionId=64

The deadline for Representatives to submit bills for this years session is tomorrow, so please ACT NOW!!!!!!!!"

Do your part and help your local brewpub...and yourself.

Is Beer the New Milk?

Well, I don't think beer will be replacing milk anytime soon for calcium but a new study just released this week says that beer is a rich source of dietary silicon. Dietary silicon helps with the growth and development of bones and connective tissues. It could also help in fighting the bone disease osteoporosis. The study also had the following to say:

"The researchers examined a variety of raw material samples and found little change in the silicon content of barley during the malting process. The majority of the silicon in barley is in the husk, which is not affected greatly during malting. The malts with the higher silicon contents are pale colored which have less heat stress during the malting process. The darker products, such as the chocolate, roasted barley and black malt, all have substantial roasting and much lower silicon contents than the other malts for reasons that are not yet known. The hop samples analyzed showed surprisingly high levels of silicon with as much as four times more silicon than is found in malt. However, hops are invariably used in a much smaller quantity than is grain. Highly hopped beers, however, would be expected to contain higher silicon levels. No silicon was picked up from silica hydrogel used to stabilize beer, even after a period of 24 hours and neither is there pick up from diatomaceous earth filter aid."

"Beers containing high levels of malted barley and hops are richest in silicon,” concludes Dr. Bamforth. “Wheat contains less silicon than barley because it is the husk of the barley that is rich in this element. While most of the silicon remains in the husk during brewing, significant quantities of silicon nonetheless are extracted into wort and much of this survives into beer.”

Meet the Head Brewer from St. Bernardus

If you have ever had any of the beers from St. Benardus brewery you know that they are some of the best in the world. They are the epitome of what a belgian style of beer is. And being actually from Belgium probably helps with that as well. This coming Monday, February 8th at 7:00pm you will get a very rare chance to meet the head brewer, Marco Passarella, at The Lodge in Boca Raton. The night will start off with a meet and greet at 7:00pm followed by a formal tasting of 4 of their beers at 7:30pm led by Marco. He will talk about the history of the brewery and the beers as well as some other story along the way. I have heard from people that have seen him do tastings before that it is one of the most informative and funny tastings they have ever been to. The tasting will run you $10 but not only do you get a chance to hear about the beers from the brewer but the 4 St. Bernardus beers will be on tap. I don't think I've ever seen a place have all 4 beers on tap at once. This for sure is a not to be missed event.

The online tickets are sold out so you will need to get there early to stand in line to get your ticket. Tickets will be $30. I'm sure this doesn't need to be said but the event is only 21 plus so be sure to bring your ID or you'll be sitting in the car while your friends have the time of their lives. You will also find live music, a best dressed monk contest and a silent disco. Food will also be available for you to purchase inside so you can soften the blow from all this great beer. Here are the breweries you will find there Saturday.
