Most fans of craft beer already know what a work of art these fine brews are.  Now the art community at large is embracing craft beer at a level that I have never seen before.  Not only are you seeing craft beer in the Wynwood/Design District taking over most bars in the area but you are also seeing some not so normal places popping up to grab a brew while you check out some art at the art fairs going around town all week.

Bloomberg Business: Plot To Destroy America's Beer Article

Have you ever read an article that you thought was so important that you just wanted to share it with everyone.  Bloomberg Businessweek has done just that.  I know most people see these big beer companies and know they are these huge companies that are more interested in making profit then good beer but you may not know the extent that they go to to make that money.  This article shows you the lengths that they will go to cut the flavor and cost to produce the beer while raising prices and making a huge impact on people connected to these companies all over the world.  I do realize that these companies have an obligation to there shareholders to make money but those shareholder should also know what that is costing in the long run.  Hope you find this article as insightful as I did.

SOBEWFF Event: BEER TASTING WITH SPIEGELAU: DOES THE GLASS MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

It looks like beer is finally getting some notice by the good people at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival this year.  Even though the sponsorship by Amstel seems to keep out any craft beers from being a part of the festival it does still use the talented students from FIU's brewing program to bring some interesting beers to the party.

This year is the first year that an event focusing exclusively on beer has been held at the festival and it is very exciting to see that beer is getting noticed by such a big festival.  The Beer Tasting With Spiegel: Does The Glass Make A Difference? event will focus on how the glass can change the way you perceive a beer to taste.  It is taking place February 22nd, 2013 for 5:30-6:45pm at the James Rotal Palm Hotel.  Here is what SOBEWFF has to say about the event:

"If you’ve ever wondered if the glass makes a difference, here is your chance to find out! Matt Rutkowski, VP of Spiegelau sales, will lead a glass tasting featuring Spiegelau’s beer connoisseur set. You will taste and compare four different beer styles in different Spiegelau beer glass shapes. At the end of the tasting, the glasses are yours to keep.

Whether sharing a few pints with friends or on an endless pursuit to find the most exceptional ale, Spiegelau beer glasses are the essential vessels to make each brew taste even better. As more and more people are finding the fun in exploring the nuances of various types of beers, the craft beer industry is enjoying a growing cachet and distinction similar to fine wines. And like wine, beer tastes better when in the right glass. This set of four glasses includes the stemmed tulip, the tall pilsner, the wheat beer glass, and the lager glass. With shapes designed to showcase varying flavors of the grains, yeast and hops, channel the aroma and preserve the frothy head and volatiles, this kit is ideal for the serious beer drinker or the budding aficionado. Spiegelau’s Beer Connoisseur Kit glasses are made of durable crystalline and are dishwasher safe.

Spiegelau traces its glass-making roots back to 1521 in Spiegelau, Germany, tucked in the primeval forest of Bavaria. For almost 500 years, Spiegelau has created glassware known for its sleek design, durability and strength. Today, Spiegelau beer glasses represent German craftsmanship at its best.

The BREW FIU brewing club composed of current and former students from Florida International University’s Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management will brew all of the beer served at this seminar. Funds raised from previous Festivals have gone toward the construction of a state-of-the-art teaching restaurant at the school, which will feature an on-site brewing science laboratory."

The tickets will run you $85 and you can buy them by clicking here.

Somehow I was nominated for a New Times Web Award.  The group I've been nominated with is humbling.  I'm pretty sure I'm the underdog in this race but what the hell, might as well give it a shot:  if you would like to vote for us for Best Food Blog (I guess they are including drink under it as well) then just click here.  It means a lot that I'm even nominated but I'm not going to lie, it would be even better to win.  Thanks again for all the support throughout the years.

2nd Annual Grovetoberfest- Ticket Discount

The time is almost here again for one of the best beer fest in Florida.  If you live anywhere in Florida or even outside of Florida you should start planning your trek to Coconut Grove for the 2nd Annual Grovetoberfest October 13th at Peacock Park.  The Grovetoberfest crew was very interested in what people thought of last years fest and took everyone's comments into consideration when planning this year festivities.  You can expect a smaller VIP area with only 500 VIP tickets being sold this year.  Also you can check out a new ticket level for Beer Socialites where you'll be able to get in an hour earlier with the VIPers without having all the that pesky food that takes up room for all the beer.  Speaking of beers, they'll have over 200 different beers this year.  This is not like every other beer fest out there.  You will get a great selection of craft beer along with some rare beers that you may not have a chance to try again.   Not sure what you will be in for at Grovetoberfest?  Well, you'll be able to sample some of the beers you'll be having at the fest for free.  Yes, free.  Just head on over to one of the many tastings the good people from Grovertoberfest will be holding at great beer bars all over Miami leading up to the fest. You can see the whole schedule here.

Now for the best part.  The Grovetoberfest crew has given us a special code to pass along to you to get $10 off a General Admission ticket now through August 30th.  Just enter promo code SOFLABEER when you go to check out.  You can purchase tickets by clicking here. Hope to see you all there!

Rio Station To Replace Zeke's Roadhouse

As I'm sure most of you heard Zeke's Roadhouse has closed its doors.  When I first heard the news I was heartbroken.  Where was I going to go and sit on Lincoln Rd and watch the parade of people while having a good inexpensive beer?  Luckily today my worries were lifted when I met with the new owner of the space where Zeke's once occupied.  Rio Station is the new kid on the block and will be doing some things the same and some different.  First $4 beers will be staying.  The beer selection will still have a good choice of craft beers with the amount pulled back slightly.  The new thing is that you will now be able to get food while you drink.  They will have wraps and salads along with smoothies.  They will also be open every day of the week.  And speaking of opening, Rio Station will be open for business starting July 2nd.  I don't think Zeke's Roadhouse will ever be replaced but there is still a good option for good cheap beer on Lincoln Rd.

Guest Review- House Of Dog

(Editor Note: This is the first guest review I have had on the site and I wanted to thank Jason Pear for taking the time to write it.  If you are interested in doing a guest review please get in touch.)

By Jason Pear

Initially, I want to take a moment to thank Dave for giving me the opportunity to guest post on his blog. In addition, I want to apologize for my delay in getting him my review. I hope to have opportunities to post in the future and to submit my next post more timely.

A few months ago I went with my girlfriend to House of Dog, ‘Dogs n’ Beer’, a restaurant which appears to be attempting to corner the gourmet kosher hot dog restaurant in the so-called mid-Beach area of Miami Beach. As you may know there are a number of kosher restaurants in this area, serving the kosher community. This is particularly important to note as they are closed Friday night, Saturday during the day, and on all significant Jewish holidays (e.g., Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur). Also, during Passover they are unlikely to be open as neither beer nor bread is kosher for Passover. I recommend calling them before making a trip to the Beach. Because of the restaurant’s limited hours, we went on a Sunday at approximately 6 p.m.

We parked at one of the public parking lots south of 41st and did not have trouble finding a metered spot. I recommend making sure that you have change (or at least cash), even though the machines will accept credit cards. Also, as a resident of Miami Beach, I know full well that the police officers are more than happy to give out tickets – in Miami Beach always make sure that you have enough money in the meter.

Outside there were one or two plastic tables with chairs, unfortunately they were taken so we were forced to sit inside. Inside, the d̩cor was dark with stained wood and barely enough light for me to see my notepad. There was a large family with crying children, which detracted from our enjoyment Рother than that family the restaurant was basically empty. There were two televisions, which were playing basketball. Also, there were hookahs lining the walls, suggesting that they may attract large numbers of teenagers and people in their early to mid twenties. Based on my experience, the busy nights for the younger crowd is likely Thursday and Saturday nights (Thursday they are open until 2 a.m., on Saturday they stay upon until 3 a.m.). There was also a very odd disco ball in the middle of the restaurant; it was unclear what possible use this could have.

The restaurant does not maintain taps – they have approximately 30 bottled beers including Cigar City Jai Alai, Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, and other craft beer staples. The beers were less expensive than you might expect at under $6.00 for all but the most expensive beers – like Arrogant Bastard and The Bruery's Saison Rue Belgian Saison. I did not find the beer selection very impressive, but it was better than you are likely to find at any other hotdog shop. I had a Cigar City Jai Alai which was great, as always. Unfortunately, they did not carry any ciders – which is my girlfriend’s alcoholic drink of choice.

I was really excited about eating a “beer infused dog” – I believe that they use Pabst – but unfortunately I was stymied and limited to fries because they didn’t have any of the meatless hotdogs that are on their menu (and I am a vegetarian). My girlfriend had a Rueben (or something like that) and said that it was very good. My fries were of the Belgian variety, and were quite good.

Overall, House of Dog is a welcomed addition to burgeoning (but highly limited) beer scene on the Beach – and I’m sure will be highly attractive for kosher consumers. The beer selection is better than what you would expect, but certainly not as extensive as at DRB or Abraxas. Hopefully, as the restaurant gets its feet wet they will carry more (and more unusual) beers and get a tap. I would consider going there again, but would make sure to call first and ask if they have any vegetarian hotdogs in stock. If you are looking for a good (albeit expensive) hotdog and want a good beer, I suggest you consider House of Dog.

United Way's Brew & Bites Ticket Giveaway

The annual United Way Wine & Food Festival is upon us once again.  I was able to go to a couple of the events last year and they were all amazing.  The highlight for a lot of people I talked to was the Brews & Bites event and it looks like the United Way thought so as well by now making it it's kick off event.  Brews & Bites will take place next Wednesday, April 18th at Mary Brickell Village.  You can check out the full list of participating restaurants by clicking here and breweries by clicking here.  You can also buy tickets for this worthwhile event by going here.

The good people over at the United Way have given me a pair of tickets to giveaway for the event.  If you would like a chance to win the tickets all you have to is have a friend like our Facebook page.  Once your friend likes the page they just need to leave a comment with your name.  You can do this with as many friends as you want and be entered into the giveaway each time.  They must be new people liking the page leaving the comments not people that already like the page.  Then on Monday I will put each entry into a hat and pull out a winner.  The more people you get to like our page and leave a comment with your name the more entries you will have and a better chance you have to win.  Good luck!!!

Do You Drink Beer? Can You Write?

The first question is probably pretty stupid since you are already reading a beer blog.  It's more the second question that I am interested in.  I am looking to add more content on the site and I am looking for a few good individuals that have their fingers on the pulse of beer in South Florida.  Are you the type of person that always talks to your friends and family about the deep complexities of your favorite brew?  Do you like to check out new bars and restaurants right when they open?  Then you may be the person I'm looking for.  I'm looking for people to write reviews on beers as well as bars/restaurants/events.  I make no money doing the blog so unfortunately I have none to pay anyone to write but I may be able to pay you in a beer or two from time to time.  If you are interested please send me some examples of your writing (don't need your college thesis paper just something short and sweet).  How often do you go out a week?  What places do you frequent?  What are your favorite types of beer?  Anything else you think might help you get the job.  You can send your submission to dave@southfloridabeerblog.com.  I look forward to hearing from you.
